🚌 Getting around
Free buses, trams and trains nationwide
Since 1 March 2020, all public transport (RGTR/AVL/TICE buses, tram, CFL trains in 2nd class) is free everywhere in Luxembourg - no ticket, no age or residency condition, tourists and cross-border commuters included. Only 1st class on trains stays paid, from age 12.
Free train to 3 stations just across the border
Free travel normally ends at the border, but 2nd class train trips stay free to and from Athus (Belgium), Audun-le-Tiche and Volmerange-les-Mines (France). Beyond that, you need a cross-border ticket or pass (RegioZone for buses, international ticket for trains).
Vël'OK: 100% free bike sharing in the South
In 9 southern communes (Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange, Bettembourg, Kayl, Mondercange, Rumelange, Sanem, Schifflange), Vël'OK bikes are free 24/7, for locals and visitors alike. Free mandatory registration (ID required), from age 14, max 2 hours per ride.
14– y.o.Official sourceStudentepass RegioZone: unlimited cross-border buses at a cut price
Not free but seriously discounted: the Studentepass lets pupils and students under 30 (holding a myCard) ride RegioZone cross-border buses unlimited for 1 year at €130 (€200 for the Saarbrücken Express line). Proof of enrolment or a valid student ID must be shown on request; international trains are not included.

The 'citywifi Free' network is completely free with no data cap in 9 communes, including Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Strassen. Free account on first connection (mobile number + SMS code); designed for outdoor use.
🎭 Culture
Mudam: free for under-21s and students
The contemporary art museum in Kirchberg is always free if you're under 21 or have a valid student card (instead of 10 EUR). And on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 pm, admission is 0 EUR for everyone.
Nationalmusée (MNHA): free for under-26s
The Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart (archaeology, history, art) is free if you're under 26, no other conditions. Bonus for everyone else: free entry on Thursday late openings (5:30-8 pm) and during the last hour before closing.

Luxembourg City's history museum is free if you're under 21, and 3 EUR if you're 21 to 26 (or hold a Carte jeunes). On Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm, entry is free for everyone.
National Library (BnL): free membership from age 14
Signing up at the BnL is free for anyone aged 14 or over: access to the reading rooms and the physical and digital collections. Home lending and online resources are reserved for people living in Luxembourg or the neighbouring border regions.
14– y.o.Official sourceKulturpass: free museums and 1.50 EUR shows (conditions apply)
If money is tight (cost-of-living allowance, REVIS, international protection, or a form from a social partner - including some uni.lu students), the Kulturpass is free: free entry to partner museums plus concert, theatre, dance and festival tickets at 1.50 EUR. For Luxembourg residents, valid 2 years.

If you're 30 or under, any Philharmonie concert costs 10 EUR through the Phil30 app: classical, jazz, electro, film concerts. Seats open in the app from 10 am the day before, up to 1 hour before the show.

For 10 EUR, the Carte Jeunes gets you discounts in Luxembourg and across the European EYCA network (culture, leisure, travel). Conditions: be aged 12 to 30 and live in Luxembourg or within 30 km - so cross-border residents qualify too.
12–30 y.o.Official sourcePlanning Familial: free, confidential medical consultations
Free medical and gynaecological consultations, plus free pregnancy tests, condoms and period products - for everyone, no age condition, even without health insurance. If you're a minor, it stays confidential: your parents are not told.
Student holiday job: zero tax withholding up to 16 EUR/hour
With a pupil/student holiday contract (ages 15 to under 27, max 2 months or 346 hours per year), your pay can be exempt from tax withholding if it doesn't exceed 16 EUR/hour - the employer files the request. For social security, you're only affiliated for accident insurance.

Mudam is free for under-21s and for students with a valid student card. Aged 21-25, the reduced rate is €7 (instead of €10). On Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm, entry is free for everyone.

The Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart (archaeology, history and art) is free for under-26s, permanent collections and temporary exhibitions included. Adults pay €7.

Villa Vauban is free for under-21s and for students under 26 with a valid card. Aged 21-26, the reduced rate is €3 (instead of €5). On Fridays from 6pm to 9pm, it's free for everyone.

Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain is entirely free, with no age or status condition. Walk in and see the exhibitions right in the city centre.
Phil30: every Philharmonie concert at €10 under 30
If you're 30 or under, every Philharmonie concert costs €10 through the Phil30 programme: classical, film concerts, jazz, electronic. Book via the Phil30 app from 10am the day before, up to one hour before the concert.

The Kulturpass is a free pass, valid 2 years: free entry to partner museums and €1.50 tickets for shows (subject to availability). Reserved for residents receiving the cost-of-living allowance, people attested by a partner social organisation and applicants for international protection - no age condition.

BnL membership is free from age 14, whatever your nationality, valid 2 years and renewable for free. Home loans and digital resources are free, reserved for people living in Luxembourg or the neighbouring regions.
14– y.o.Official sourceFree music, dance and drama classes until 18
Since the 2022 school year, municipal music education is free for under-18s, from musical awakening up to the first-cycle diploma: instrument, singing, choir, jazz, drama and dance - 3 conservatoires, 12 regional and 23 local schools. Beyond the free offer, fees are capped at €100 per subject per year.
Cinémathèque: cinema for €2.40
At the Cinémathèque (place du Théâtre), tickets drop to €2.40 instead of €5 for under-18s, students and youth-card holders; a book of 10 reduced tickets costs €17. Reduced rate sold at the box office only.
European Youth Card: €10 for discounts everywhere
The European Youth Card (EYCA) costs €10 for ages 12-30 living in Luxembourg or within 30 km. Digital version via the MyEYC app, discounts in Luxembourg and across Europe - including -50% at the Esch pool.
12–30 y.o.Official sourceNational Resistance Museum: free entry
The National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights in Esch-sur-Alzette is entirely free, for everyone, no conditions. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 2-6pm.
🎓 School & studies
Free school textbooks in secondary school (myBooks)
All mandatory textbooks are free for students in public secondary schools (and private schools following the official curriculum), including vocational training and European/international classes: up to 450 EUR saved per year. Order via the myBooks app and pick up your books at a bookstore; choosing second-hand gets you a voucher worth 50% of the new-book price.
Cut-price school canteen meals (Restopolis)
In Restopolis school restaurants, student prices are State-subsidised: full starter + main + dessert menu for 4.70 EUR, starter + main or main + dessert for 4.20 EUR, takeaway dish or menu for 3.70 EUR (2025/26 price list). Book via the Restopolis website or app.
Mobility grant: 1,566 EUR/semester towards your student rent
Studying outside Luxembourg and paying rent? The AideFi mobility grant adds 1,566 EUR per semester to your financial aid, upon proof of your rental costs. Apply before 30 November (winter semester) or 30 April (summer semester).
CEDIES state study grants (AideFi)
The State funds your higher education: base grant of EUR 1,258/semester, social-criteria grant up to EUR 2,438/semester, family grant of EUR 301, and an optional EUR 3,250/semester loan at a capped rate. Apply online via MyGuichet each semester.
Free school books in secondary school via myBooks.lu
All compulsory textbooks are free for pupils of Luxembourg public secondary schools (classic and general secondary, vocational training, European/international classes and some private schools following the official curriculum). Order on the myBooks.lu app, pick up in a bookshop - worth up to €450 per school year.
AideFi: state study grants and student loan
For recognised higher education, the State pays a basic grant of €1,258 per semester, topped up according to your situation (mobility €1,566, social criteria up to €2,438, family grant €301), plus an optional loan of €3,250 per semester at max 2% interest. Apply on MyGuichet: 1 Aug-30 Nov (winter) and 1 Jan-30 Apr (summer) - late applications are refused.
Summerschool: free catch-up classes before term starts
Every late summer, the Ministry of Education runs optional FREE catch-up classes: maths, German and French in primary; languages, maths and sciences in secondary - including to prepare September resit exams. Sign up via your class teacher or school office.
Restopolis: school restaurant meals from €3.50
In Restopolis school restaurants, learners pay a heavily subsidised rate: full menu €4.70, takeaway dish €3.70, snack €3.50 - versus €8.70 for adults. You need your pupil myCard or a University of Luxembourg student card.
SePAS and CePAS: a free counsellor at your school
Every secondary school has a SePAS (psychologists, social workers, educators): free, strictly confidential support for anxiety, low motivation or family issues. Nationally, CePAS welcomes ages 12-30, including during holidays.
12–30 y.o.Official sourceBee Creative makerspaces: 3D print for free
Six Bee Creative makerspaces with robots, 3D printers and laser cutters, offering free workshops (coding, robotics, 3D printing). At Base1 (Forum Geesseknäppchen), ages 8-30 can walk in without registration.
8–30 y.o.Official sourceUni.lu student housing from €400/month
The University of Luxembourg rents student rooms from €400 per month (Bachelor, Master, exchange). Reserved for full-time enrolled students; demand peaks in September and February, housing not guaranteed.
SNJ volunteering: go on a mission, the State funds it
Before 30 (from 16 for some programmes), do a volunteer service coordinated by the SNJ: national (up to 12 months) or European Solidarity Corps (14-59 days, or 3-12 months). Pocket money, allowance, social security and free training included.

Youth centres (Jugendhaus): totally free access
Pool tables, consoles, sport, cooking, outings and youth workers who actually listen: access to Luxembourg's youth centres is free and no-strings, only some special activities may cost extra.

Luxembourg City runs free sports classes for young people up to 16 (football, beach volleyball, ice skating and more). Registration with parental consent is required; city residents sign up first, but anyone can join.

At the Bonnevoie pool (Luxembourg City), young people over 12 with a Carte Jeunes get 50% off all tickets (adult entry: EUR 3.40).

Free entry to the Kockelscheuer ice rink, skates included, for University of Luxembourg students and PhD candidates during the winter-semester programme - valid student card required.
'Sports pour tous' youth classes: free in the city
Luxembourg City's 'Sports pour tous' classes are free for young people (4-16): 30+ activities including skateboarding, breakdance, futsal, weight training and archery. Registration with parental consent required; city residents have priority.

At the Esch-sur-Alzette pool, adult entry is €6 for 3 hours - half price with a student card, the European Youth Card or a disability card. Ages 4-11 pay €3.

116 111: the Kanner-Jugendtelefon listens for free
The Kanner-Jugendtelefon is Luxembourg's listening service for children and young people: call 116 111 for free, anonymously and confidentially, to talk about whatever is on your mind. Online help and chat available - nothing is shared with your parents.
BEE SECURE Helpline: free advice about your online life
The BEE SECURE Helpline (8002 1234) offers a free, anonymous and confidential phone consultation: cyberbullying, social media, privacy, IT security. Open to children, young people, parents and teachers - Mon-Wed 9am-4pm, Thu 3-6pm, Fri 9am-12pm.
Planning Familial: free medical and gynaecological consultations
Planning Familial medical and gynaecological consultations are free, with no age condition and even without health insurance - no invoice is ever sent. Psychological consultations are free too (voluntary contribution based on income). Centres in Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette and Ettelbruck.
Contraception 100% covered, no age limit
Since 1 April 2023, contraception is 100% covered: pill, patch, ring, implant, IUD, morning-after pill, sterilisations. A prescription is needed, except the morning-after pill which is available in pharmacies without one; male condoms are not covered.
Free HPV vaccination up to age 26
HPV vaccination is free: base programme ages 9-14, catch-up ages 15-20, and since April 2026 a transitional (3-year) extension for young adults aged 21-26. Two doses 6 months apart, at your doctor's.
9–26 y.o.Official sourceStudent job: a real contract, almost zero contributions
Aged 15-27, you can work during school holidays: max 2 months or 346 hours per calendar year, paid at least 80% of the social minimum wage depending on age. Only accident insurance applies: neither you nor the employer pay health or pension contributions. Written contract required.
15–27 y.o.Official sourceHoliday job: €0 tax withheld up to €18/h
Upon your employer's request to the RTS office, your holiday-job pay is exempt from tax withholding if your net wage doesn't exceed €18 per hour. For pupils and students aged 15-27 under a school-holiday contract.
15–27 y.o.Official sourceCIGALE: free youth workshops and testing
The CIGALE centre (LGBTIQ+ centre) offers free workshops for teens and young adults. Every Thursday, the Red Cross provides free, anonymous, walk-in testing for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis there.
DIMPS: free, anonymous mobile testing
The Red Cross DIMPS is a mobile unit offering free, anonymous rapid tests for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis - open to everyone, no age or status condition.
SOS Détresse: someone listens, for free
SOS Détresse offers free, confidential, anonymous support: by phone on 45 45 45, by chat (Mon & Thu 5-9pm) or by email. English line on Sundays 11am-11pm.
Axxess Study: free banking for students
Spuerkeess's Axxess Study package is free for students aged 18-30: free Visa debit card, free credit cards (subject to approval), preferential savings rate and access to state-guaranteed student loans.
18–30 y.o.Official sourceRental guarantee: the State vouches for you
Can't lock away 2 months' rent for a deposit? The Housing Ministry vouches for you (up to 2 months' rent excl. charges) if you're an adult, legally resident for 3+ months, within income ceilings and your rent is ≤50% of income. In exchange you save 1/36th of the amount monthly for 3 years.
Rent subsidy: up to €520 per month
If you rent your main home on the private market, your income is under the ceilings and your rent (excl. charges) exceeds 25% of your net income, you can receive a subsidy of €10 to €520 per month. From age 18, applications open year-round.
Youth leave: paid days for your commitment
You work and volunteer to supervise youth activities (camps, animator training, events)? Youth leave grants up to 60 days over your career (max 20 days per 2 years), compensated and refunded to the employer by the State. Apply at least 3 weeks ahead.
CIE: a paid springboard to your first job
The employment-initiation contract is for under-30s registered with ADEM for at least 3 months: 12 months in a company (extendable by 6) with a tutor and training plan. Allowance of 80-130% of the social minimum wage depending on age and degree; the employer must offer a real hiring prospect.
