Animation isn't a genre, it's a technique. It can serve a family comedy or a heartbreaking drama about war or grief. Judging an animated film by its form is like judging a book by its cover.
Some traditions, notably Japanese animation, have long embraced stories for teens and adults. Look beyond the big mainstream productions and you'll find unexpected gems.
Why it hits so hard
Freed from the constraints of reality, animation can show the invisible: a dream, an emotion, a memory. Maybe that's why some of its images stay etched in us for years.
