In praise of lurking: reading it all, posting nothing

Reading everything, posting nothing: lurking is a real way to take part. Time to give it its due.

They read everything, miss nothing, know every debate and every running joke in their favourite communities. But they never post. They're called lurkers - the ones who linger in the shadows - and they make up the internet's great silent crowd. Time to give this way of inhabiting the web its due.

The invisible pillar of communities

Without readers, there is no community. The people who write do so because others read, react silently, come back. The lurker isn't a stowaway: they're the audience, and the audience is what makes the stage exist. A brilliant discussion in front of an empty room simply wouldn't happen.

Lurking is also the best school. By watching without joining in, you learn a place's tone, its touchy subjects, its respected figures, its humour. It's exactly what any polite person does on arriving at a party where they know no one: they listen first.

Why silence is a legitimate choice

Web culture glorifies constant speaking up, as if existing online required producing. It doesn't. You can love a community and have nothing to add for now. You can prefer to learn. You can simply not want your words written down somewhere. None of these reasons needs justifying.

And if one day you want to speak

The best first message is often a modest one: a sincere question, a thank-you, a useful detail on something you know well. Communities instantly recognise someone who has lurked for a long time: you know the codes, you strike the right note, you don't ask the question that was answered yesterday. Your past silence becomes your best calling card.

So no, you're not 'inactive' because you don't post. You read, you sort, you remember: that's an activity in its own right. The proof: without you, all those people would be writing into the void.
