Internet Nostalgia: When the 2000s Web Makes Its Big Comeback
Blurry pixels, MSN sounds and ugly wallpapers: why everyone is suddenly missing the old internet.
The dial-up modem sound, wildly customizable profiles, blinking GIFs: a wave of nostalgia for the 2000s internet is flooding social media. And even those who never lived through it are joining in.
The return of 'proudly ugly'
After years of clean, minimalist design, we're rediscovering the charm of cluttered pages, animated cursors and garish colors. It's the 'frutiger aero' and 'old web' aesthetic: a joyful mess that feels more human than today's slick interfaces.
The Luxembourg echo
In the Grand Duchy, a whole generation remembers the first Luxembourgish forums and chats, the nights spent burning CDs and after-school instant messaging. Beyond the wink, this trend reflects a real fatigue with algorithms deciding everything for us: we miss a web where you built your own page by hand. It remains to be seen whether it's just a nostalgic filter or the start of a desire to take back control.
