The before and after format: why transformation always works

A messy bedroom, a repainted wall, a drawing taking shape: two images are enough to tell a whole story. It is one of the most recycled formats on the web, and one of the hardest not to watch.

Tidying, hair, DIY, drawing, cooking, revision: the subject changes, the structure never does. A starting state, a jump, a finishing state. This format shows up everywhere because it depends on no particular theme - it works just as well on a shelf as on a rough notebook.

A complete story in two images

A story usually runs in three beats: a situation, an upheaval, a resolution. Before and after gives you two and lets you infer the third. You need no caption, no context, not even to know who is filming: the start and the end are enough to show that something happened. That is what makes the format universal, and instantly readable in any language.

What goes missing in the middle

The middle is precisely the expensive part: the hours, the failed attempts, the moments of half giving up. The format rewards the result and erases the effort. Hence a misleading impression when you watch these one after another: everything looks fast, clean, within reach. It is not a lie, it is an edit - but stacked together, it ends up distorting your sense of how long things actually take.

Watching it with your eyes open

You can enjoy this format while keeping in mind what it cuts out. The best before and afters are often the ones that also show the middle: the half-finished mess, the step that went wrong, the version that looked like nothing. And if you make one yourself, keeping a few frames of the work in progress is the most honest way to tell the story - and usually the most interesting one.
