The Mullerthal: rocks, gorges and zero regrets
Sandstone labyrinths, mossy gorges and an iconic waterfall: Little Switzerland is the hike that converts people who hate hiking.
This region is nicknamed "Luxembourg's Little Switzerland", and for once the nickname isn't overselling it. The Mullerthal, in the east of the country, lines up spectacular rock formations, narrow moss-covered gorges and forests straight out of a fairy tale. If you think Luxembourg has nothing wild to offer, this is exactly where you come to be proven wrong.
Scenery unlike anywhere else in the country
The Mullerthal's secret is its sandstone: erosion has carved walls, crevices and passages so narrow you sometimes have to slip through sideways. Some rocky corridors stay cool even at the height of summer, and the light filtering between the boulders creates almost unreal atmospheres. Every bend in the trail holds a surprise: a cliff, a cave, a staircase cut into the rock.
The waterfall everyone photographs
You can't talk about the Mullerthal without mentioning the Schiessentümpel: a small waterfall crossed by a stone bridge, deep in the forest. It's probably one of the most photographed places in the country, and once you're there, you get why. The best move is to come early in the morning or on a weekday, when the site is quiet and the only sound is the water.
Getting your first visit right
The trails are waymarked and there's something for every level, from short loops to more ambitious routes. Berdorf, Consdorf and Echternach all make good starting points, each reachable by free bus. Two tips that change everything: shoes with proper grip, because wet sandstone gets seriously slippery, and plenty of water, because the climbs make you earn them.
Go with friends, pack a picnic and don't stress about the distance: in the Mullerthal, even a short loop is enough to make you feel like you've travelled. That's the magic of the place.
