The rewatch: restarting the show you know by heart

A whole stockpile of things you have never seen is waiting, and yet you restart the episode whose lines you can already recite. It isn't laziness: the already-seen does a job that novelty cannot do.

The scene is familiar: a list of things to discover as long as your arm, a choice that drags on, and in the end the same opening credits you have already watched an indecent number of times. The paradox is complete. Never has so much new material been available, and never has the urge to revisit what you already know by heart been so stubborn.

Watching without having to keep watch

A new story asks for work: remembering names, working out who resents whom, accepting that you won't grasp everything at once. A story you have already seen asks for nothing. You can follow it distractedly, fold laundry, answer a message, come back, and nothing will have been lost. It is less entertainment than background sound with the good manners to have a plot.

The comfort is knowing the ending

The real appeal isn't the story, it's the absence of risk. In a familiar show, no nasty surprise is waiting: the sad part arrives when you expect it, the favourite scene is still there, and the world holds together to the end. When the day has been uncertain, that is exactly what is missing, a place where you know every turn in advance.

You never rewatch the same episode

The other pleasure, less readily admitted, is measuring how far you have moved. You notice details that stayed invisible the first time, you find a character you adored a little bland, you finally get a line that used to fly over your head. The show itself has not changed: the viewer has moved, and rewatching becomes a quiet way of noticing that you have grown up.
