Vianden: a fairy-tale castle, for real
A medieval castle towering over a river town, a chairlift with a view and forest trails: Vianden feels like time travel.
Some places hit the same way every single visit, and Vianden is one of them. You arrive through the Our valley, you look up, and there it is: a massive fortified castle perched on its rocky spur, towering over the slate roofs of the little town. It feels like a film set, except everything is real and reachable within a day from anywhere in the country.
The castle that steals the show
Carefully restored, Vianden Castle is regularly ranked among the finest in Europe, and the visit lives up to the hype: vast halls, ramparts, impressive timberwork and plunging views over the valley. Even without going in, the walk up from the old town is worth it, with the castle looming larger at every bend.
On the way back down, take time to wander the main street: old houses, little shops, bridges over the Our. The town is tiny, but its charm is off the charts, especially out of season when the lanes are quiet.
The chairlift and the view from the top
Another local quirk: a chairlift climbs above the valley depending on the season, offering one of the most memorable panoramas in the country, with the castle seen from above and the Our winding below. You can ride up and walk back down through the forest trails - that's the winning combo.
Getting there without a car
Vianden has no train station, but the fix is easy: free train to Ettelbruck or Diekirch, then a free bus right into the heart of town. The ride through the Ardennes valleys is already part of the experience. Bring decent shoes, a little change for a waffle or an ice cream, and leave the rest to the Middle Ages.
