Echternach: the country's oldest town and its lake
A thousand-year-old abbey town with a huge lake next door: Echternach mixes old stones and fresh air like nowhere else.
Echternach holds a title no one can take from it: it's the oldest town in the country. Born around its abbey more than a thousand years ago, it has kept a compact historic centre that's a joy to wander: an arcaded market square, cobbled lanes, an imposing basilica. And a short walk from the centre, surprise: a big lake ringed with greenery.
An old town made for wandering
Echternach's centre needs no map: you drift from the market square towards the abbey, then along the old town walls. The café terraces are ideal for watching local life go by, and the whole place has a peaceful atmosphere you rarely find elsewhere. It's a town that doesn't try to impress - which is exactly why it does.
The lake: a nature break just outside the centre
Echternach's lake is the town's other face. A flat path loops all the way around it, perfect for walking, running or an easy ride, with jetties, lawns and picnic spots along the way. It's the kind of place where a one-hour stroll easily turns into a whole afternoon, somewhere between a nap in the sun and duck-watching that gets more gripping than expected.
The trick is the combo: old town in the morning, lake in the afternoon. Two completely different moods, zero logistics, and you head home feeling like you got two outings for the price of one.
If you feel like walking further
Echternach is also one of the gateways to the Mullerthal: trails leave straight from town towards the region's famous rock formations. So you can start with an urban stroll and end up deep in sandstone gorges. Free buses connect Echternach to the rest of the country, so the only real question left is the weather.
