Cycling safely when you're young
Helmet, visibility, anticipation: the basics to pedal calmly in the city.
The bike is a great way to get around, as long as you follow a few simple rules. The first: be seen. In the city, a visible cyclist is a protected cyclist, especially at dusk or when it rains.
The gear that changes everything
A well-fitted helmet, front and rear lights, and light-coloured or reflective clothing make a real difference. Check your brakes and tyre pressure before leaving: two quick moves that avoid a lot of nasty surprises.
On the road, anticipate. Look far ahead, signal your turns with your arm, and watch out for car doors that can open without warning. Keep a safe distance from vehicles.
Finally, use the cycle lanes where they exist. They're designed for your safety and make the ride smoother. If you're unsure about a manoeuvre, it's better to put a foot down and set off again calmly.
