Healthy self-deprecation: why laughing at yourself feels good
Being able to laugh at your own little struggles is a real strength (and a great stress-buster).
Tripping in front of everyone, sending a message to the wrong chat, blanking on a word mid-presentation: it happens to everyone. The difference is how you handle it. People who can laugh about it usually walk away lighter. Self-deprecation, in the right dose, is a quiet superpower.
Laughing at yourself, not putting yourself down
Careful though: laughing at yourself isn't putting yourself down on repeat. The idea is to defuse the drama, not to beat yourself up. A kind joke about your clumsiness, yes; telling yourself you're worthless, no. That nuance changes everything for your mood.
Humor about yourself also makes you more approachable. People feel at ease around someone who isn't afraid to show they aren't perfect. It builds connections, lightens the mood, and defuses plenty of awkward situations.
If you notice you spend most of your time criticizing yourself, even jokingly, it's worth talking to someone you trust or a professional. Real humor about yourself should lift you up, not drag you down.
