Travel budget when you're young: managing spending without missing out
Travelling on a small budget is an art you can learn - and it makes every trip more fun.
Budget is often what blocks the first trips. Yet leaving with little forces you to travel better: you get creative, you walk more, you eat local. The goal isn't to spend as little as possible on everything, but to put your money where it matters to you.
Splitting your spending categories
Mentally split your budget into three piles: transport, lodging, and the rest for living on site. Set a loose limit for each, without turning into an accountant on holiday. Just knowing where your money goes saves you nasty surprises when you get back.
The tricks that make the difference
Take advantage of everything free on site: walks, viewpoints, markets, events open to all. Bring snacks to avoid impulse buys when you're hungry. And always keep a small reserve for the unexpected, because there's always one.
A good trip isn't measured by how much you spent. Some of the best getaways are also the cheapest, because you're more present and less rushed. A tight budget is sometimes the best guide.
