Walking into a thrift shop for the first time is a skill — here's how to nail it.

Second-hand shopping has an intimidating reputation: cramped racks, sizes all over the place, no obvious logic. Yet it's the best playground for building a style that's truly yours without blowing your budget. The trick is to go in with an idea rather than drowning in the stock.

Before you go

Pinpoint one or two pieces you actually need: an oversized shirt, straight-leg jeans, a mid-season jacket. With a clear goal you scan the racks faster and dodge impulse buys that end up buried in your closet. Bring something to measure a garment too, since sizes from different eras barely mean anything.

Once there, take your time

Check the seams, zippers and the spots that wear out fast like elbows or the crotch. A small stain or a missing button is fixable; a hole or a stretched-out fabric much less so. Always try things on, even when the label shows your usual size.

One last habit: don't be afraid to leave empty-handed. A good thrift run is sometimes a single find that transforms a whole outfit. Patience is your best ally, and the stock keeps changing.
