Procrastination: the subtle art of putting everything off
'I'll start in five minutes': the biggest lie in a teenager's life.
'I'll start in five minutes.' We've all said it, we all know it's a lie. Procrastination is that mysterious talent that pushes you to do absolutely anything but the task at hand. Suddenly, sorting your pens by color becomes an absolute priority.
Why we put things off
Often, we put things off because the task feels too big or not fun enough. The brain prefers the instant reward of a video over the effort of homework. Nothing abnormal: everyone procrastinates at some point. It's human, not a flaw.
The good news is that there are simple tricks. Break a big task into small chunks, commit to just five real minutes, or promise yourself a break after. Often, the hardest part is starting; after that, it rolls on its own.
If procrastination becomes a real weight that stresses you out all the time, it's worth talking to a trusted adult or a professional. Otherwise, ease up: laughing a little at your talent for putting things off is already a first step toward action.
