Job hunting online without giving away your personal data
What a real recruiter can ask for, and what should alarm you.
Job hunting online is convenient, but it exposes you to sharing a lot of info about yourself. Not all listings are equal, and some mainly want to harvest your data. A bit of vigilance changes everything.
What's normal, what isn't
A serious employer can ask for your CV and a way to contact you. They won't ask for your banking codes, a copy of your whole file, or a payment to apply. Those requests should make you back off immediately.
Protect yourself simply
Share only what's necessary, and keep a record of your exchanges. In Luxembourg, the data protection authority and online safety resources clearly explain your rights over your personal information.
Your data is a bit like your money: once given away, you don't easily get it back. Stay in control of what you share, and never feel ashamed to say no to an abusive request.
