Bubble tea: the beginner's guide to ordering right
Pearls, foam, tea, sugar level: crack the menu before you order.
Bubble tea is that Taiwanese tea with tapioca pearls you slurp through a fat straw. The first time, the menu can look unreadable: tea base, topping, texture, sugar level. No stress, you pick each of those yourself.
How to read a bubble tea menu
Start with the base: black tea, green tea, or a milkier, softer version. Then the topping: classic tapioca pearls, or fruit bubbles that pop in your mouth. Finally you set the sugar level, often adjustable, which helps if you don't like things too syrupy.
The smart move for your first time
If you're unsure, get a fruity base with classic pearls and reduced sugar: a safe pick almost everyone enjoys. You'll fine-tune your taste later. And ask for a wide enough straw, otherwise the pearls get stuck at the bottom.
Bubble tea shares nicely with friends after class. It's become a little social ritual as much as a drink.
